American Way explores the effect that our friends across the pond have had on life in the UK, taking away from some of the eccentricities that make British life so unique. There is, however, a nod to some of the more amiable traits of American lifestyle and culture, as well as a hint of sarcasm at the downfall of British society.
lyrics
When you talk you must project
Hold your head up to connect
And when you sing stand up straight
No need to clarify your words to communicate
'Cos it's a simple conversation
When your nation speaks then everyone obeys
It's the monopoly of today
Not even black or white
It's just the American way
When you laugh you must be bold
Leave sarcastic stick-in-the-muds to UK Gold
When you compete it's at all cost
Forget sentiment and taking part, there's no riposte
'Cos it's a simple conversation
When your nation speaks then everyone obeys
It's the monopoly of today
Not even black or white
It's just the American way
You can't bring yourself to talk to me
You won't return my calls, I just can't break the walls of authority
It's blind invasion every step I take
We're losing who we are and what we were
I wish that I could break the American way
When you laugh you must be bold
Leave sarcastic stick-in-the-muds to UK Gold
When you compete it's at all cost
Forget sentiment and taking part, there's no riposte
'Cos it's a simple conversation
When your nation speaks then everyone obeys
It's the monopoly of today
Not even black or white
It's just the American way
You can't bring yourself to talk to me
You won't return my calls, I just can't break the walls of authority
It's blind invasion every step I take
We're losing who we are and what we were
I wish that I could break the American way
But all I really want to talk about
Is the crazy cool cats when they twist and shout
Hitch hike across 66
With a dollar to my name and I'll get my kicks with you
Freewheelin' with a broke guitar
Filling up on liquor in an old fruit jar
I want to hear some boogie woogie in a Memphis saloon
Want to fall asleep with you outside under the bright blue moon
And then I'd like to be alone
On the way back home
It's blind invasion every step I take
We're losing who we are and what we were
I wish that I could break the American way
